Civil Engineers to Gather in Tampa for the ASCE 2024 Convention

TAMPA, Fla. â€” The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2024 Convention takes place this week at the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street in Tampa, Florida, October 6-9! As the 2021 bipartisan federal infrastructure law continues to be implemented nationwide, civil engineers from across the country and around the globe will convene at ASCE’s flagship conference to explore the progress being made to our built environment and the challenges that lie ahead. The impacts of Hurricane Helene have underscored the importance of resilient infrastructure systems. Topics to be explored through convention presentations include infrastructure resilience against extreme weather events; highlights of significant projects; technical tours of Tampa projects; solutions to workforce shortage challenges; and examining the role of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the infrastructure space.

  • Mon., Oct. 7, 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. â€” Opening Plenary Session with Dr. Ayanna Howard: How AI will Define the Future of Everything â€” Influential  roboticist, practitioner, and leader Ayanna Howard, Ph.D., will shed light on the wide-ranging impacts AI will have.
  • Mon., Oct. 7, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. â€” Climate Risk Reduction in Building Practices â€” Leading resilience experts from ASCE and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) discuss the latest innovations in climate-risk reduction building practices and how codes and standards are adapting to modern weather patterns.
  • Mon., Oct. 7, 4:00 – 5:15 p.m. â€” Workforce Challenges: Developing the Engineers of Tomorrow, Today â€” Despite record funding, the infrastructure sector lacks the number of engineers required to drive available projects through completion. Join engineering workforce leaders for a panel discussion on strategies to attract the next generation of engineers, as well as how to retain and expand the workforce of today.
  • Tues., Oct. 8, 10:15 – 11:30 a.m. â€” What’s Up in Washington – Bridging the Gap: What does the future of the IIJA look like? â€” With the bipartisan infrastructure law nearly three years old, how are water and transportation industries being impacted by the record levels of funding? Hear from industry leaders, including those currently crafting the 2025 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, on how the law is changing infrastructure sectors and what other policies are on the horizon.
  • Tues., Oct. 8, 11:30 – 1:00 p.m. — Industry Leaders Forum – Bridging the Gap: How Business Leaders are Reimagining Infrastructure â€” While recently increased federal investments have been critical, the prioritization of resilient and sustainable infrastructure and the introduction of cutting-edge technologies have drastically shifted how businesses are directing resources and preparing for the future of the nation’s infrastructure systems. National leaders from the public and private sectors discuss infrastructure market dynamics, state and federal policies, and societal trends.
  • Tues., Oct 8, 6:30 – 10:00 p.m. – OPAL Awards Gala â€“ the OPAL Awards Gala honors outstanding civil engineering leaders and projects The evening will culminate with revealing the Honor Award project that will take home the top prize of the night – the 2024 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award.
  • Wed., Oct. 9, 8:15 – 9:30 a.m. â€” From the White House to the State House: What does Election 2024 Mean for Infrastructure â€” Jeff Dufour, Editor in Chief at National Journal, provides insights about how the election is shaping up, what we might expect on Election Day and beyond, and the role that infrastructure might play in the 119th Congress. 
  • Wed., Oct. 9, 8:15 – 9:30 a.m. â€” Taking Measure: How Earthquake Reconnaissance Has Evolved Over Fifty Years â€” Leaders in the structural engineering space discuss the evolution of seismic resilience over the last 50 years, including the events that triggered changes to codes and standards. 
  • Wed., Oct. 9, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. — Closing Luncheon with Julia Pollak; How to Succeed in the New Work Economy â€” Julia Pollak is ZipRecruiter’s chief economist. She will break down what data is saying about employment trends by industry and examine what companies can do to attract the best candidates.
