Bellows Falls, VT: Applied Bolting Technology™ is proud to announce the global adoption of its innovative Squirter® DTIs (direct tension indicators). Tens of millions of these groundbreaking devices have been utilized throughout the United States, Canada, Central America, South America, Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific Rim. There are many reasons why Squirter® DTIs are used by some of the world’s leading engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firms.

The DTI Difference

Standard DTIs are hardened, washer-shaped devices incorporating small arch-like protrusions on the bearing surface. These protrusions are designed to deform in a controlled manner when subject to a compressive load. Unlike other tightening methods, including turn-of-nut, twist-off bolts, and calibrated wrenches, when a DTI is sufficiently compressed, it tells you the bolt has been tightened correctly, regardless of bolt characteristics like length or condition.

Why Squirter® DTIs Stand Out

Squirter® DTIs have all the benefits of standard DTIs. On top of that, the key feature that sets them apart is the expulsion of semi-permanent orange indication media. This deploys when a bolt has been properly pretensioned, making bolt installation and inspection easy and accurate.

Benefits for Installers

  • Efficiency: Correct tensioning is achieved swiftly, as operators can visually confirm when to stop, moving to the next bolt without hesitation.
  • Visibility: The prominent orange media is easily seen, eliminating the need for feeler gauges.
  • Verification: Installers can confidently demonstrate that all bolts have been properly tightened.

Benefits for Inspectors

  • Convenience: The visible orange media allows inspectors to confirm bolt tensioning without the need to climb to connections or carry a torque wrench.
  • Confidence: Unlike traditional methods requiring sampling with a feeler gauge, Squirter® DTIs enable nearly 100% inspection accuracy.

“When using Squirter® DTIs, installers don’t miss any bolts,” Rob Westover, Applied Bolting Technology™ Field Bolting Specialist, said of the product. “Inspection can be done on your schedule. Since our Squirter® DTIs have a semi-permanent orange indication media, the work can be visually inspected whenever.”
